ARLINGTON, VA – The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is proud to support the bipartisan Safer Highways and Increased Performance for Interstate Trucking Act, or “SHIP IT Act,” introduced by Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) and Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA). The SHIP IT Act is a comprehensive piece of legislation aimed at addressing the pain points in the supply chain system, which has impacted the electroindustry’s ability to get products to market in a timely and cost-effective manner.
The SHIP IT Act includes key provisions that will add fluidity to freight movement in America by modernizing the authority for certain vehicle waivers during emergencies, allowing truck drivers to apply for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grants. It also incentivizes new truck drivers to enter the workforce through targeted and temporary tax credits, streamlines the CDL process, and expands access to truck parking and rest facilities for commercial drivers.
“The electrical manufacturing industry is heavily reliant on a strong and efficient supply chain to ensure the timely delivery of products to customers across the country,” said NEMA President and CEO Debra Phillips. “The SHIP IT Act addresses the specific pain points that have affected our industry, including the need for more shipping capacity and a streamlined CDL process, and access to truck parking. NEMA applauds this bipartisan initiative, and we urge Congress to pass this legislation to help improve our transportation and supply chain system.”
